Flamingo massacre, 2014

Marker on paper, 24 x 32 cm

In March 2014, the Frankfurter Zoo was shaken by the so-called "flamingo massacre." Following the discovery of 15 brutally killed Chilean flamingos, the press initially suspected human sadists to be behind the act: "To date, unknown perpetrators repeatedly stabbed the birds or severed their heads." It was not until the autopsy that the fragments of that night were correctly pieced together: a fox had broken into the enclosure and, driven by hunting instinct, slaughtered the clipped, flightless birds.

This graphic work is inspired by Pointillism. Out of thousands of individual dots of color, the image of the tragedy emerges. The technique mirrors the reconstruction of the incident—the piecing together of clues to reveal a truth.
