Lovebirds, 2014

5 drawings on index sheets

The five-part work "Die Unzertrennlichen" (The Inseparables) was created in early 2014 during the project Chorprobe #1 (Ria Gerth) at the Artoll Kunstlabor in Bedburg-Hau. These pure colored pencil drawings depict pairs of Agapornis parrots, commonly known as "lovebirds."

Discarded cardboard index tab sheets serve as the canvas. These tabs symbolize the attempt to impose order on paperwork and on life itself, embodying a rigid bureaucracy that stands in stark contrast to the vibrant energy of the lovebirds.

The work was deeply influenced by the history of the venue—a former psychiatric clinic. During an era when questionable practices were used to treat conditions such as "hysteria," patients and their emotions were institutionalized and filed away. "Die Unzertrennlichen" addresses this systematic cataloging of human feelings. Placed within the rigid structure of old archives, the delicate drawings explore the tension between deep emotional connection and institutional isolation.
